Community Impact Program Overview

The Community Iimpact Program (CIP) strives to literally accomplish its name and positively impact minority communities. This program, funded by Royal Bank of Canada Liberty Life Insurance Company, provided four HBCUs the opportunity to impact specific health disparities in their surrounding communities.

HBCU Educational Programs
CIP challenges Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to develop creative and innovative programs that focus on improving the health and wellness of the campus and community.

Participation in CIP requires institutions to facilitate community partnerships, faculty research, student internships, public service announcements and community health fairs.

UNCFSP and representatives from each HBCU met
to plan each school's Community Impact Program

The CIP HBCUs are:

Bennett College for Women - Greensboro, NC

Jarvis Christian College - Hawkins, TX

Philander Smith College - Little Rock, AR

Virginia Union University - Richmond, VA

Bennett College for Women's HIV/AIDS
Summer Institute for middle and high school girls

Community Partnerships
The HBCUs established sustainable partnerships with local community organizations to address health disparities that affect the African American community including, but not limited to: HIV/AIDS, obesity, alcohol and substance abuse, and infant mortality.

Activities
Activities must educate and draw community participation. All programs sponsored community health disparities workshops, seminars, and community health fairs. Students made a 'story board' for a public service announcement.

Keepin' it Real (KIR)
Through web streaming, Special Programs TV aired the 'Keepin' it Real' Show, hosted by Gil Knowles, director of UNCFSP's Division of Community and Education. The KIR show engages college students in lively discussions addressing health disparities in minority communities.

The 'Keepin' it Real' Show (SPTV) launched its first episode addressing Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Future episodes addressed HIV/AIDS, obesity and infant mortality.

Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
The Community Impact Program required each HBCU to provide a 'story board' (conceptualization) to UNCFSP for the production of a 30-second Health Disparity Public Service Announcement: Infant Mortality-VIrginia Union University; HIV/AIDS-Bennet College for Women; Obesity- Jarvis Christian College; and Alcohol and Substance Abuse-Philander Smith College.
