Program Overview

The Campus Health Advocates Mobilizing HIV Prevention Strategies (CHAMPS) Networking Consortium is bringing together the expertise of UNCFSP and HBCUs to address HIV/AIDS prevention and the prevention of other health-risk behaviors in college-aged youth. Since college-aged African Americans are among those disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS, HBCUs have a unique opportunity to be catalysts for positive change through this Consortium.

The CHAMPS Network Consortium is designed to enhance and strengthen campus HIV/AIDS curricular activities among college-aged at risk youth by collaborating with faculty, administrators, students and community organizations. The goal is to systematically improve and expand existing institutional HIV/AIDS education policies and programs on HBCU campuses. Each of the core components will serve to collectively enhance HBCU infrastructure. The four core components of the CHAMPS Network Consortium are:

(1) Coalition building
(2) Social marketing
(3) Peer/prevention education
(4) Policy development
and each will serve to collectively enhance HBCU infrastructure.

Support services for funded projects such as technical assistance, capacity building assistance, and online research database access will be provided by UNCFSP and supporting organizations such as the American Red Cross (ARC) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Prevention strategies and social marketing materials created will be presented at the CHAMPS National Conference in 2011.
