NASA Science and Technology Institute’s Summer Faculty Fellowship Program
This newest component was designed to increase the number of research experiences available to research faculty at MIs. This ten-week hands-on research experience allows faculty to build collaborations, network, and garner professional development training that will further develop research interests and expertise. Participation in the SFF is intended to further enhance the basic research and management capability of MIs by allowing their faculty to become intricately involved in NASA-related areas of interest.
The NASA Science and Technology Summer Faculty Fellowship Program targets full-time, early career, STEM faculty from Minority Institutions (MI) in the United States . Faculty Fellows will engage in an ten week research experience with scientists and engineers at one of nine NASA Research Centers. Additionally, the fellowship recipients will receive professional development training, housing and travel allotments and a stipend. The goals of the program are as follows:
- To enhance the technical capabilities and prepare faculty to apply for other NASA Pipeline opportunities
- Opportunity to share information about specific MSI capabilities and technologies
- Enhancement of undergraduate and graduate research
- Opportunity to build scholarly publication skills
The participation of fellows will serve to increase knowledge of the scientific and technical needs of NASA as well as increase the capability of MIs to participate in NASA-sponsored research and development (R&D) programs. Fellow participation will also allow NASA to share information about leading edge technologies and establish relationships with the MIs. In addition, fellows will receive training in the latest methods of teaching mathematics, science, and engineering, and in the presentation of research results. These benefits will strengthen the fellows in their careers and provide enhanced capabilities to assist in the academic preparation of future scientists and engineers.
ELIGIBILITY
- The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.
- The applicant must be (at least) a full time, tenure-track faculty member of a Minority Institution.
- The applicant must hold a position within a STEM department at the MI
- The applicant must be recommended by Dean AND Vice-President or Provost.
- The applicant should also be recommended by a NASA host scientist/engineer located at one of the following 9 NASA Research Centers:
- Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
- Dryden Space Flight Center, Edwards, CA
- Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH
- Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD
- Johnson Space Flight Center, Houston, TX
- Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA
- Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL
- Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL
- Stennis Space Center, New Orleans, LA
- The applicant must return to the home institution in a teaching/research capacity for at least one year after the fellowship.
BENEFITS
The fellowships will provide science and engineering faculty members with an opportunity to increase their professional knowledge and contribute to NASA research projects. The fellowship will strengthen the relationship between the scientists at NASA Research Center and the academic community. Key benefits are listed below:
- Provide early-career faculty the opportunity to conduct research at one of nine NASA Research Centers that will enable the recipients to compete better in the mainstream, peer-reviewed research programs of NASA.
- Provided fellows with opportunities to interface with high level NASA and other government officials, to participate in NASA’s R&D programs, and to learn about innovative scientific and engineering research methods.
- These experiences will enhance their professional careers and better position their home institutions to participate in NASA’s mission.
STIPENDS
Faculty fellows will remain on the payroll of the institution where they are employed. Fellows will receive a stipend of $12,500.00 to cover travel, lodging and living expenses for the fellowship period.
