Summer Internship Opportunties Program
Program Overview
The Summer Internship Opportunities Program (SIOP) sought to build a cadre of new scientists and researchers from MIs, thereby increasing the number of underrepresented minorities that pursued STEM degrees and enter STEM careers. For seven weeks during the summer, SIOP interns gained hands-on experience at various research laboratories within the Department of Defense (DoD) while being mentored by DoD scientists and researchers. Upon conclusion of their experience, the SIOP interns had a better understanding of how science, mathematics, engineering and technology played a vital role in DoD’s research operations.
